With the lactose intolerance test you will know if you have lactose intolerance or lactose malabsorption. We analyse hydrogen and methane levels with a breath test after ingesting a controlled dose of lactose.

Hydrogen (H2)
If there are bacteria in the small intestine that should not be there, the consumption of foods rich in sugars and fermentable carbohydrates causes an increase in exhaled hydrogen and/or methane levels, from the time of ingestion until before the 90th minute.
Methane (CH4)
If there are bacteria in the small intestine that should not be there, the consumption of foods rich in sugars and fermentable carbohydrates causes an increase in exhaled hydrogen and/or methane levels, from the time of ingestion until before the 90th minute.

Is milk or cheese bad for you? Lactose is a sugar present in milk and its derivatives, and some people have difficulty processing it correctly. When this happens, certain gases increase and we can detect intolerance or malabsorption. From home, with results in 7-10 days and medical consultation available.

Unexplained digestive discomfort? The digestive pack consists of three hydrogen and exhaled methane tests to check if your body is digesting these sugars correctly and if there is bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. A complete way to understand what is behind symptoms such as heaviness, gas, or diarrhoea.

Frequently asked questions about this test

The day before the test, it is not permitted to eat: milk or dairy products, cereals, bread, biscuits, toast, rusks or pancakes, pastry products, sweets or chewing gum, jams, pulses, potatoes, vegetables, fruit and fruit juice, dried fruit and nuts and processed cold meats (cooked ham, turkey, mortadella, fuet, salami...). It is also recommended to avoid alcohol, tobacco and carbonated water.

The lactose intolerance test measures hydrogen and methane levels in the breath. Increased levels of hydrogen and methane in the breath indicate lactose malabsorption, suggesting that the person may have lactose malabsorption/intolerance. These biomarkers are useful for diagnosis because they reflect the fermentation process in the small intestine when lactose is not absorbed properly.

It will be necessary to fast for 8 to 12 hours before the breath test (non-carbonated water is allowed).

Assess how your body metabolises fructose. If it is not digested properly, it ferments in the gut and causes symptoms such as gas, bloating, diarrhoea or digestive discomfort.

If you are on a regular treatment, check with your doctor to see if it needs to be stopped before the test or if it could affect the results.

Antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors (such as omeprazole) and antacids (such as Almax) are not recommended. It is also important not to have had a colonoscopy or intestinal lavage in the last 30 days.
