With this test you can measure your blood levels of vitamin D, which plays an important role in your health: it helps absorb calcium for strong bones and contributes to good muscle function and immunity.

Vitamin D
Monitoring vitamin D levels is essential to be able to take action in cases of chronic hypovitaminosis. To this end, we help to measure 25-OH (or chalcidol) values, the form of vitamin D that is metabolised in the liver and which is the most suitable biomarker for measuring vitamin D levels due to its stability and accuracy.

Frequently asked questions about this test

Everything you need to know

Vitamin D levels in the body fluctuate throughout the year due to seasonal differences in sun exposure, as well as variations in diet. The amount of sunlight we are exposed to tends to decrease in winter and in areas with cloudier climates. Our diet also varies throughout the year, especially in summer and during the festive season. For these reasons, it is advisable to check our vitamin D levels periodically and thus be able to assess how they vary between times when we get more and times when their levels are lowered.

The main source of vitamin D is through direct sun exposure. It is therefore important to maintain responsible sun exposure throughout the year to be prepared for the summer months. On the other hand, foods such as fatty fish (salmon and tuna), eggs and livers from free-range animals (which have been exposed to the sun) are also rich sources of vitamin D, ideal for supplementing the amounts we produce when exposed to the sun.

Vitamin D plays a number of important roles in the body:

  • Calcium regulation: this vitamin is essential for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus which are essential for the maintenance of healthy bones, teeth and cartilage.
  • Muscle function: Vitamin D is key in preventing muscle weakness.
  • Immune system: this vitamin plays an important role in the body's response to infection and disease.
  • Cardiovascular health: vitamin D controls blood pressure and helps prevent atherosclerosis.
  • Prevention of chronic diseases: Vitamin D is also involved in the prevention of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, and some cardiovascular conditions.

The vitamin D test does not require any special preparation. However, we recommend taking the sample first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, and even better, after a warm shower to get the blood flowing.

You do not need to stop taking oral contraceptives on that day, and if you are taking any specific thyroid monitoring treatment, it is preferable to have the sample taken before taking the dose for that day.

If your levels are altered, we recommend repeating the test after 3 months to monitor your progress. If your levels are in the normal range, a test every 12 months would be sufficient.
