The thyroid test measures two key hormones: free T4 (the active thyroid hormone in the blood) and TSH. Together they indicate whether your thyroid is functioning properly and how it affects your metabolism, helping to detect hypo- or hyperthyroidism.

  • What it measures
TSH
By detecting the amount of this hormone in the blood, we are able to assess how much the thyroid is being stimulated for the production of thyroid hormones that are essential for metabolism.
T4 Free
Measurement of T4L in the blood provides information about whether the thyroid is producing a normal amount of thyroid hormones, or whether it is functioning abnormally. Its measurement also helps us to detect hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Tiredness, weight or mood swings? Alterations in thyroid function can affect the balance of the body. With this test you can evaluate the main thyroid markers in the blood (free T4 and TSH, which regulates the gland) and identify possible alterations such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, without displacement.

This analysis assesses the profile thyroid, measuring the main thyroid hormones (TSH, T4L and T3L, T3R) and anti-thyroid antibodies, which indicate whether there is an autoimmune component. It is ideal for a complete thyroid work-up, especially if you have Hashimoto's, another autoimmune disease or want more than a basic test.

Everything you need to know

Pregnancy causes endocrine hormonal changes, including changes in the thyroid gland. In women with symptoms compatible with a known thyroid disorder, regular check-ups are performed. Some experts also recommend screening asymptomatic women before and during the first trimester of pregnancy, but there is no definitive consensus.

If the results are normal, we recommend a follow-up every 6 months.

Any alteration in TSH or free T4 together with symptoms or signs compatible with thyroid dysfunction should be evaluated by your doctor for further investigation.

The basic thyroid function test does not require any special preparation unless you are on a specific thyroid monitoring treatment. If this is the case, it is preferable to have the sample taken before taking the dose for that day.
