Lipoprotein(a) Blood Test

Cardiovascular risk - Lp(a)

69,00

The cardiovascular risk test measures lipoprotein(a), a risk marker with a strong genetic component, associated with an inherited risk of heart disease and stroke, which is not usually included in routine testing.

Lipoprotein a - Lp(a)
It is a key biomarker for assessing inherited cardiovascular risk. Lp(a) is a particle produced by the liver that circulates in the blood, and elevated levels can contribute to the formation of plaque in the arteries, significantly increasing the risk of heart and circulatory system diseases. Since its levels are mainly determined by genetic factors and are not easily modified by lifestyle, measuring Lp(a) allows the identification of hidden risks that are not detected by other more common indicators.

Normal cholesterol but history of heart attack? Lipoprotein(a) is a genetic marker of cardiovascular risk that is not included in routine testing. Elevated levels can increase cardiac risk even with normal cholesterol. International guidelines recommend testing for Lp(a) at least once in a lifetime to anticipate and make informed decisions.

THE LIPOPROTEIN(A) TEST IS FOR YOU IF:

  • Have you had cardiovascular problems or do you have family history of heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular diseases.
  • Some family has been diagnosed with high levels of lipoprotein(a) - Lp(a)-.
  • You present hypertension or overweight and you want a more accurate assessment of your cardiovascular health.
  • You want to complete your cardiovascular assessment with a marker that is not measured in conventional tests.

Frequently asked questions about this test

Everything you need to know

Lp(a) is a genetic biomarker associated with cardiovascular risk. Unlike other lipids that can be modified by diet or exercise, Lp(a) levels are determined almost exclusively by genetics and remain stable throughout life. Elevated levels promote the formation of plaque in the arteries (atherosclerosis), increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.

According to the guidelines of the Spanish Society of Arteriosclerosis (2022), levels above 50 mg/dl are considered high cardiovascular risk. This implies that, even if other parameters are within the normal range, the risk of cardiovascular events may be underestimated if Lp(a) is not taken into account. In these cases, a more intensive approach to control other risk factors such as LDL-cholesterol, blood pressure and lifestyle may be necessary.

Since Lp(a) is genetically determined and does not vary significantly over time, a single measurement is usually sufficient for life. Only in very specific cases is a repeat measurement recommended, e.g. if there are relevant clinical changes or if you are participating in an experimental treatment aimed at reducing levels.
